Collusion Brew 2013

Collusion brewTo celebrate American Craft Beer Week and the friendly, collaborative nature of the craft beer industry, all the breweries located in Fort Collins have teamed up for the 2013 Collusion Brew project.

We did things a little different this year, though. Rather than have all the breweries come together to make a single beer, we all started with the same base recipe, and each brewery worked with two other breweries to make something unique. FCB’s brew was made in collaboration with Coopersmith’s and Black Bottle. Together, we decided on additions to the malt bill, chose the yeast strain, and chose the hops. In our case, because we love smoke beer so much, we added smoked malt to recipe.

On brew day, we all got together and shared some beers and stories…oh yeah, and we brewed the beer, too.

FCB’s Collusion brew will be available in the Tasting Room starting May 13th, and all 9 of the Collusion brews will be tapped at Black Bottle on May 13th.

FCB Enters Sweden Market

FCB (The Fort Collins Brewery), maker of Chocolate Stout, Red Banshee, and Rocky Mountain IPA, is embracing the growing international appreciation for American craft beer by opening distribution in Sweden. In late April, a container was filled with cases of FCB’s Rocky Mountain IPA and Red Banshee and sent on its way to Europe, where it will land in early June. The beer will hit shelves in mid June, and Swedish beer lovers will have the opportunity to taste this Colorado craft brew.

“Exporting was not part of our strategic vision,” says FCB’s marketing director, Charles Stanley, “ but we were approached by Galatea Distributing’s US liaison, who made us aware of the growing demand for US craft beer in Sweden.”

Despite this demand, FCB was cautious, and it took its time with the decision. “This is entirely new ground for us,” says Doug Smith, FCB’s Operations Manager. “Freshness of the beer was a big concern, of course. The beer takes a long time to get to the shelves compared to distributing in the US, but after talking through the details with Galatea, we were convinced that transit time would be kept to a minimum and our beer would be kept refrigerated every step of the way.”

If Rocky Mountain IPA and Red Banshee are well received, FCB and Galatea plan to put additional styles in the market.

World Beer Championships Results

imagesIf it weren’t for the wildfires burning outside our window, it would be the perfect Friday: it’s warm, the sun is shining, and it’s two days before St. Patrick’s Day. What could make it better? How about getting some great news from the Beverage Tasting Institute’s World Beer Championships?

PosterDoppelBockDoppel Bock received a score of 97, or platinum level. This means it is tied for first in the world with Aying (yes, the German one) and Capital Brewery. Read the review.

Rocky Mountain IPA brought in a silver medal with a score of 86. Read the review.

And Obsessed Barley Wine, a limited release beer in our Tap Club series, clocked in with a score of 95, or gold level, and is tied for third place. Read the review.

All in all, not a bad day at all.

Doppelbock is currently on tap at the FCB Tasting Room, and we’re holding onto some Obsessed. Maybe you’ll get lucky, and we’ll put it on again soon.

Meet Our New Marketing Director

Charles and his wife, Emily.

To adapt a well-known riddle, if a great beer is brewed, but nobody drinks it, is it still a great beer? That’s the question the owners of Fort Collins Brewery, Tom and Jan Peters, asked themselves going into the brewery’s tenth year of operation. Since purchasing the brewery in 2004, Tom and Jan have focused on improving the quality and diversity of FCB’s beers: building a new brewery from the ground up in 2010 and investing heavily in new equipment, including a state of the art bottling line in 2007 and a new 50 barrel automated brewhouse (the vessels used for actually brewing the beer) that will be installed in the summer of 2013.

“We’re very proud of the beer we make and the strides we’ve taken to get to this level of quality and consistency,” says Tom Peters, President of Fort Collins Brewery. “We’ve seen steady growth over the last ten years, but it’s been mostly through word of mouth and the efforts of our sales team on the ground. Now that the beer is where we want it to be, we want to fly our flag higher and spread the word about what we’re doing here.”

To that end, Tom and Jan hired Charles Stanley to fill the role of Marketing Director for FCB. Stanley, the former Strategic Projects Manager for Upland Brewing Co. and editor and publisher of the book A Six Pack of Stories, comes to The Fort Collins Brewery with several years of experience in the beer realm.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with the beer and the team that is making it,” says Stanley. “The quality of the liquid is great, and there’s a great culture here. The only thing FCB has been missing is someone to tell the world about it. The beer we’re making here is top tier, and I want to see FCB’s place in the minds of craft beer drinkers match that.”

Stanley plans to spend his first months with FCB systematizing and consolidating FCB’s existing marketing efforts and building strong relationships with the media and local organizations that make up the cultural fabric of FCB’s markets, especially in Colorado’s Front Range. Once the groundwork has been laid, he plans to get creative.

“Ultimately I want to tell the story of FCB, give people new and fun opportunities to interact with our brewery and our beer, and provide support for the bars, restaurants, and stores that carry our beer,” says Stanley.
